• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Richard Natale -- A master class fantasy fiction novel : In Pangs, the masterful short story writer Jerry Wheeler has devised a captivating and sexy fantasy horror novel that is cleverly and intricately plotted with startling moments of mayhem and lust (both libidinal and spiritual). Read it for the ingenious storytelling and marvel at how Wheeler elevates this tale with his dazzling and inventive prose. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Louis Flint Ceci -- What a horror adventure thriller should be : Wheeler's three-part novel is engaging from beginning to end. The first part, "A Thirst for Talent," puts such an unusual twist on vampire lore that I could not put it down and read it at a single sitting. The second, "Pangs," built to a classic battle to the death pitting evil (but actually good) against evil (but really evil). The last, "Lord of the Land" was in the vein of H. P. Lovecraft where what is good is difficult to see and act on, and the defeat of the source of all the horror that haunts the first two parts does not bring joy. The style of the whole is intriguing: I kept getting vibes of Jules Verne and Edgar Allen Poe (who makes an actual, if unconventional, appearance in "Pangs" and is crucial to "Lord").
