The book is full of such great stories and anecdotes. The writers clever use of language is brilliant and it really helps to paint a picture for you. The use of honour in the tales is great and there are some wonderful surprises. There is something for everyone in this book. I feel as though I went along with him on his amazing adventure. Donegan’s mastery over the english language allows him to paint pictures of the cultures, character and landscapes of every country between here and New Zealand. You are placed firmly into his shoes on each page; I could taste the food (and the wine pairing); I know the people and their stories; I’ve lived through the history he describes. I particularly liked his adventures in the Port of Alat (where we met). It was beautiful to read of the events from someone else's perspective, and have it so vividly painted for me in my mind's eye - bringing it all back to life in an instant! Verwey -- A fantastic tale of self exploration and adventure! : Donegan provides a truly personal and humble account of an underprepared backpacker adventuring across the globe. The authors use of colourful and descriptive language combined with measured symbolism, allows you to follow him every step of the way through his journey. This is particularly vivid when describing the food, smells and tastes the author encounters, combined with the fascinating characters he meets along his journey. The author accurately provides the reader with insightful historical and cultural overviews of the countries he visits. Not only is this text a brave piece of travel literature, but it is also one about self discovery and growth, overcoming incomprehensible barriers and hurdles to tell a beautiful story. Every story throughout was written so it could be imagined by the reader, I felt as if I experienced Sam’s ventures.
